Clothing designers have to decide where they’ll place themselves on the fashion map. Will they stick with the traditional current styles that will sell for sure now? Will they keep on the cutting-edge of clashing colors that look cool and flashy accessories that make you hip one year and nerdy the next (and were unheard of two years ago)? Will they push the limits and actually start new fashions, targeting the crowds of people always trying to make themselves look different from the status quo?
Whatever style of clothing a designer decides to focus on, he must adjust his marketing strategy to the target audience who will wear those clothes. If he sticks with the traditional suits, polos, khakis, and other business-casual and professional dress, he’ll target the mid- to high-income white-collar workers who travel from plush offices to comfy conference rooms.
On the other-hand, if he keeps on top of what’s “in” now, he’ll target the young preppy generation who always have to be wearing what’s in at school. If it’s cool (is that word even “in” anymore?) to wear a polo with a collar on one side and not the other, he’ll make polos that look like that. If it’s stylish to wear cargo pants with zippered pockets, that’s what he’ll make and market.
The most edgy, artistic, and outside-the-box thinkers like to push the fashion limits themselves, and then find out if they become just ignored weirdos or the representatives of the latest fashion craze. They’ll make clothes in flashy florescent colors when mild subdued colors are in.
