Naturally Hard Work
It was somewhere after my son’s third solid hit he had during the little league game last night. A father of one of the players commented to me that my son “has a natural swing.” In part because I’m horribly guilty of being overly humble (in public) about any of my son’s achievements, I replied with “well he’s worked at it for a long time.” That is very true though. Fact is, he’s been swinging the bat consistently since he was about 6 years old. It’s life’s beautiful way of offering nuggets of good fortune. We moved from Minneapolis, MN back to South Dakota. That wasn’t so much the nugget. We moved from a modest sized house to a less than 700 square foot apartment. I don’t think that was the nugget either as I think it literally drove me insane. But right across the street from the apartment complex were the town’s little league fields. I believe it’s safe to say that was one of the nuggets!
I remember hauling the bucket of balls and Mack’s tiny bat over to the field countless times that first summer we lived in the apartment. It was as if we’d made the baseball field our backyard. I have to admit, however, for as far back as I can remember, Mack does seem to have a natural swing. But with each pitch it seems to get better, grow stronger and smoother. I like the age old saying of “practice makes perfect.” Yet there’s more truth in my revised version of “passion and dedication lead to abilities that to others look natural.” I admit it isn’t as catchy as the original cliché, but it’s more on target with what it takes in life to be at the top of your game.
