With products like smartphones and e-book readers like Amazon’s Kindle, people increasingly read on little electronic devices instead of from paper books. Many websites also make books available for people to read on their screens. As people move away from print materials gradually but steadily, publishers have to adapt to the changing market. Paperback and hardcover books still sell millions but not as well as they used to. With today’s information age, people find a hoard of information competing for their attention.

Many publishers do sell e-book versions of their books for readers to buy. However, they could find a new way to market these books. They could load copies of books onto bulk flash drives. Someone who wants to read a particular book could simply purchase a USB drive, plug it into his computer, and read away. He could then transfer a file to his laptop, a PDA, phone, or other device that he can carry around to read.

A publisher could provide copies of the books in various formats: plain text, PDF, special e-book formats, etc. Then a person could copy them to various places and read them in a variety of ways. He can truly carry a book in his pocket and pull it out to read when he wants to—standing in line at the store, sitting in the dentist’s lobby, or waiting to meet with a business representative.

CFgear can print the title and author of the book and maybe even a spiffy logo on the flash drives in up to four colors. Or they can laser-engrave the text/logo onto the drives. A publisher could pick from a huge selection of USB drives: plastic, metal, wood, leather. Circular, rectangular, credit-card-shaped, swivel, removable cap, you name it.

The publishing company could provide a limited number of flash drive copies for free with a few bestselling books to test the waters for the new idea’s popularity. They could ask customers to respond on surveys and say how well they liked the book drives that they used. The publisher may even learn some new ideas for formatting the books to make them more accessible to electronic readers.

The USB drives could also link to the author’s website and more information about the book. Some books might even have supplementary video and interviews that the publisher could link to online or preload on the USB drive itself. The drive could also contain excerpts of some of the author’s other books to promote them.

Who knows, maybe bookstores will latch onto the idea and start stocking shelves full of USB drive books. CFgear can also develop custom packaging that works well for hanging on store racks or stacking up on shelves. They’ll certainly take up less space than regular books.

CFgear could provide a breakthrough for the publishing industry to sell books on custom USB drives. Stop by their website today to see their wide selection of customizable flash drives.

One Response to “Sell E-books on Custom USB Flash Drives”

My wife is currently writing an espionage / spy-tech type book and is considering the possiblities of self publishing using USB drives. (they actually play right into the theme of the novel) I am a Creative Director and marketing specialist and offered to help her with some packaging ideas if she chooses to go this route. Where would I begin my search to find a manufacturer to make a custom foam insert for a”hollowed-out” USB drive shape inside what appears to be a normal hard-back book? Any ideas?
