Good point, Vicky. The subscription service might be the magic winning point.

I had this same idea. I think the packaging is what would really count. The books would be competing with downloads so there has to be some kind of extra there. I think it would be that they came with a booklet or something, like albums and CDs. Something physical. Maybe they could reload the flash drive through a subscription service.

My wife is currently writing an espionage / spy-tech type book and is considering the possiblities of self publishing using USB drives. (they actually play right into the theme of the novel) I am a Creative Director and marketing specialist and offered to help her with some packaging ideas if she chooses to go this route. Where would I begin my search to find a manufacturer to make a custom foam insert for a"hollowed-out" USB drive shape inside what appears to be a normal hard-back book? Any ideas?
